the BIG difference with those titles (that got shut down) and gw...is gw is ftp not PAY to play...so after the initial purchase, they would really not see any true income from guildwars vs tabula rasa et.al. so trying to compare those title to guildwars doesnt quite fit.
Yes, they could still shut it down without notice (they have done lots of things they said would never happen--so why not that?), but we would hope that since gw2 is sorta/kinda/a weeeee bit drawn on the original that anet would have a bit of a say as to why not to shut it down (like 'gee whiz, we offer rewards in gw2 for doing stuff in gw1--if you shut gw1 down we wont be able to do that, and possibly offend some of our PAYING player base').
So I would hope that since gw2 seems like its going to be around for a bit, that they would keep the original around just for the tie-ins.
but who knows, could be they just want that one tiny server that we are all playing on for something----

I think it will be here for a while yet.
What comes to mind is when Blade & Soul comes to the West as it is a subscription game and you never know what is in the guys mind as server costs ect when this arrives on our doorstep.
Although I believe that this wont be here for sometime yet and Anet does not want to do to much rocking the boat re the Cantha thing will it be added to GW2 so there is a lot of things in the pot at the moment we will just hope that it remains

I came back recently as we'll. My wife and I had switched from PC to Apple, so out of sight. Out of mind I guess. When she decided to make a new office for her business, she gave me the old one to have as my "man cave". Since my iPad gaming experience has left me wanting. And since I had no desire to drop a ton of scratch for a gaming console. I decided to fish out one of the old PC's from the basement and give GW1 a go again.
Glad I did. I hope other folks get nostalgic as well.

I don't see why Guild Wars players don't take part in getting new players. There's alway updating people of Guild Wars related things like accomplishments, drama, game updates, or guild events. You know...Tweeting about those things, making a blog, social networks, friends, etc. One thing I've noticed all this time a lot of Guild Wars "fan" sites are either not run very well or run by ownership that does not have passion about the game.
Oh, yeah. It's work.

Why would I tell my friends to come play a dead game with me? No updates, no new content, just the same game we've had for years. Yeah I still love GW but I've been a fan since its release. I highly doubt many new players can hold interest for long.. not in a MMO that has essentially been frozen in time and abandoned by its own devs.

What also could be a good idea is to give access to all GW2 buyers. They can link their GW2 account to a GW1 account. This way the GW1 population gets up. Any thoughts on this?

as long as its limited access--buying a copy of gw2 should not give you a FREE copy of the original. Give them a taste so the want to buy a copy.

True althought you should give them a large part of the game. Atleast prophecies, EOTN and PvP Island so they get the chance to fill their HoM and experience the original game. This way GW1 gets new players.

if you give them eye...why bother buying the game then? its the ONLY thing they will care about for gw2.
I would say a trial account but a little bit more than that--perhaps with all 3 campaigns and eye, that way they can decide if they like it by playing a bit, and keep the toons if they decide to buy it, and maybe longer than 10 hours, like 20 or 30.

Also came back to GW after about 6 months playing GW2. Got a bit bored with it, though might go back to it at some point later if I feel like it. For now I've started a couple of new toons in GW1 and will work on those. Only thing that's sad is that I can't play with most of my old guildies that are now only in GW2, but I can always join a new guild of course.

Perhaps...but it could also be that they unexpectedly enjoy GW1. For filling your HoM you kinda need factions and nightfall anyway. It's just an idea that will never happen because NC doesn't care about GW1.
